Biographical / Historical
The Baton Rouge Herb Study Group was founded in 1989 by Annelie Smolenski and Joyce Creaghan in an effort to bring together a group of people to share experiences with herbs and continue learning about their cultivation and uses. A volunteer steering committee, The Herbletter (newsletter) and an herb of the month program. The organization has also participated a number of local activities including Habitat (put on at the Burden Center), assisted in the development of the Baton Rouge Botanical Gardens at Independence Park, creating a sensory garden and established an annual herb day to highlight their work. In 1991 the group became affiliated with the Herb Society of America. The purpose of the Baton Rouge Unit of the Herb Society of America is to further the use and knowledge of herbs and to contribute the results of their members’ experiences and research to the community at large. The Unit is organized exclusively for horticultural, educational and charitable purposes. It is registered with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit (501c3) horticultural and educational organization
