Biographical / Historical

Founded in 1987, Baton Rouge Green’s goals have been to help Baton Rouge area citizens better understand, preserve, plant and maintain trees and forests as an important community resource. Baton Rouge Green has accomplished several feats with the vigilant support of over 300 members and scores of dedicated volunteers: Planted more than 35,000 trees along roadways and city streets, on school campuses, in parks and neighborhoods; helped develop Baton Rouge’s first landscape and tree ordinance in 1991; kept citizens informed about opportunities for continual improvement of the ordinance through representation on the East Baton Rouge Tree & Landscape Commission; developed & distributed an ecology-based, native tree planting guide for East Baton Rouge Parish; worked with East Baton Rouge school officials to improve tree care on 115 campuses; provided educational, planting, preservation and conservation projects valued at more than $5.2 million; trained over 500 teachers in Project Learning Tree, a national award-winning environmental curriculum; partnered with Southern University & Louisiana State University to provide experiences in community forestry efforts to undergraduate and graduate students; developed tree nurseries to grow a more diverse array of native trees and promote their planting throughout the community; partnered with the Mayor's office and the Department of Public Works in the management of the Green Light Landscape Program. http://www.batonrougegreen.com/default.cfm
