Biographical / Historical
The American Bicentennial Collection reflects the effort to have Baton Rouge named as a Bicentennial City and the activities as a result of its subsequent reception of this award. The American Bicentennial celebrates the 200-year anniversary of the American Revolution. The local Bicentennial Commission was headed by Roy Shehan. Baton Rouge was chosen as a Bicentennial City because of its Bicentennial Heritage and the importance of the city to National history. The Commission’s activities included, but were not limited to the construction and dedication of Galvez Plaza, preservation of Historic Highland Road Cemetery, a Legacy of Trees Commission and many civic beautification projects.
